School holidays are almost upon us, and while a trip to Fiji may still be off the cards, a road trip is on the horizon for many families – in fact, 55 per cent of Australian travellers indicated that they were planning an interstate holiday by car. Not only is that good news for regional areas in need of tourism dollars, it’s also a great opportunity to invest in some quality family time.
But, let’s be honest, no one is going to enjoy five hours confined to the car if the kids are whinging, fighting or asking “Are we there yet?” on repeat. So, here are three suggestions to keep kids entertained these Easter holidays – without resorting to screen time.
1.Snacks, snacks and more snacks
Keep your children armed with plenty of healthy snacks and you’ll be amazed at how quickly the time flies. Think rice crackers, dried fruit, cheese and veggie sticks, or popcorn – all of which are easy to clean from the car floor later. You could even bring a bento box and fill it with fun snacks you pick up along the way.
2. Create the ultimate road-trip playlist
Use this opportunity to introduce your kids to some of your favourite songs, and they can teach you all the words to “Do the propeller” in return. Who doesn’t love a family sing-a-long?
3. Say yes to sticker books
A sticker book ticks all the in-car entertainment boxes: it encourages imaginative play, utlilises fine-motor skills, requires little parental input and, perhaps best of all, doesn’t make any mess!
